FORD V FERRARI V COVID-19

Many of you have seen the new release movie Ford v Ferrari which depicts the story behind the only American made car (a Ford GT40) that won The 24 Hours of Le Mans – which is the world’s oldest active sports car race in endurance racing, held annually since 1923 near the town of Le Mans, France.
It follows the passion of 2 men – Ken Miles, who was an exceptionally talented British race driver as well as a skilled mechanic and engineer; and Carroll Shelby, who was an American automotive designer, racing driver and entrepreneur. Together they got involved in Henry Ford II’s aim to break Ferrari’s winning streak at Le Mans in 1966.
In the movie, you will see that Ken Miles really only had 2 main goals – how to make the Ford GT40 faster and how to make it last the distance of The 24 Hours of Le Mans race. However, as events in the lead up to the race evolves, there are numerous times where other people with their own agendas tried to derail Ken. They try to replace him as the driver and ultimately (spoiler alert) they end up taking the win from him through a technicality.
In our country and across the world today, we have the Covid-19 crisis. Though it’s a very real health issue, some people and businesses are using it to derail us from our goals. Fear is predominantly used to drive our decision-making processes, both personally and in business. But, if you watch closely in the movie, you’ll notice that Ken Miles has this admirable ability to control his emotions and mindset. Instead of giving in to the politics of the “suits” around him and “losing his cool”, he maintains his focus – let’s make the car faster and lasts the distance…
As small medium business owners and senior managers in large corporations, we can learn from Ken Miles in our approach to dealing with the Covid-19 crisis.
What can you practically do today to ensure we go faster and lasts the distance:
• Maintain your focus – be crystal clear on what your main goal in business is. The way you get there and the path you follow may change, but stay focused on the main goal.
• Calm the noise – don’t get involved in politics, lend your ear out or get distracted by stock piling toilet paper.
• Stay connected – the virus calls for isolation and that’s what you need to do if you’re ill, but don’t disconnect from people around you. Stay connected with your business, your staff, your network. We are lucky to have some of the best technology available to us.
• Get back to basics – review your processes and systems to ensure business continuity. Cut frivolous spending and manage your cash flow. This includes making sure that your invoices are paid on time.
Let’s use these uncertain times to be certain – certain about our goals, certain within our mindset and certain about our processes. In the words of the Prime Minister @Scott Morrison - Now is not the time to pull back from business – let’s keep people in jobs and businesses in business.
